Co-Founder & Design Director, Graft Milk

What’s the story behind Art Filament? Where did it come from?

Art Filament was really born out of a desire to elevate 3D printing to a higher artform. My co-founder and I were always printing prototypes, and we realized that all the filament we had was just really ugly. It was only primary colors, with a glossy finish, and it just wasn’t the aesthetic we were after. We need something better, and we thought, maybe we should make it ourselves. That’s how it all started. We grew on this quest to find the best handful of colors that we liked. Not 50, but 10 that would do everything we needed.

Why fine arts? How does that arena overlap with 3D printing?

There are so many incredible artists around the world printing amazing work. But the field has been saturated in practicality for most of its existence. No manufacturers of filament are going straight toward art; they’re just putting materials out there and saying, do what you want with them. Now we want to tip the scales and bring more of the theory and beauty of art and design into 3D printing. Art Filament is really about product designers getting the looks they want. This is specifically towards artists, and we hope it enables even more beautiful, refined printed artwork from creators all over the world.

Where is Art Filament manufactured?

We contacted one of the best manufacturers in China, and worked with them to make a custom matte finish.

They didn’t previously have matte filament. We said, we want this texture finish that you don’t currently produce -- can you make that? And they did! It’s PLA filament, but it’s new technology we’re calling PLAm.

Have you always worked in 3D design?

My education and depth of experience is in the applied art of interior design. I have studied the fine arts and applied arts all of my life; the only A’s I ever received were in art classes. I have had a long career of designing spaces, furniture and products, but my highest passion is color. Creating vision for colors is my specialty and favorite activity. Color is everything we see -- without color there is nothing. As humans, we navigate and negotiate our way in this world through the colors we come into contact with. We at Graft Milk believe the colors we create with should be the most enjoyable.

What’s next for Graft Milk?

More filaments and more materials. We want to also move towards filament for fashion -- more stretchy materials, stuff you can print straight onto clothes. Right now people used rubberized materials, but we are working on a specific filament for fashion. It will be available soon, so keep an eye out!
